Owls Class 2025-2026

Owls will have PE on a Monday - the children will need to be wearing their PE kit into school every Monday ready for their PE session!

The children will be exploring the theme Our Local Area and Christmas during this Autumn Term 2.

Owls Class Homework

Weekly homework expectations for Reception and KS1;

Reading is the most important homework!

We would like children to read  at least 3x weekly (more is always encouraged) - This is not linked to Golden Time but children will be individually rewarded with house points for their efforts in Reading.  

Reading diaries will be checked daily with house points for reading 3 x being awarded on a Friday.

The homework sheet will be sent out via Scopay at the beginning of every half term with ideas of projects they could complete to support their learning of the themes we will be covering. Attached below is a copy of the AUTUMN Term 2 homework sheet just in case;

EYFS Subject specifics - below is a breakdown of each of the areas that the children will be learning about throughout the half term with additional details;

Literacy

This half term we will be focussing on the children being able to develop their mark making skills, focussing intitially on building their growth motor strength and fine motor skills to support their pencil grip. The children will also continue to have lots of opportunities to listen to stories as well as sharing their thoughts on the stories as well as carrying out activities based around these books. 

There will be opportunities within the provision for children to develop all of the above skills as well as their communication and language through play based opportunities.  

We are also beginning Drawing Club this half term, which is the way in which we deliver our English curriculum to the EYFS children. For more information on how Drawing Club works follow this link. Early Years at Keinton Mandeville Primary (Curriculum menu tab)

Maths

In Autumn Term 2 children will:

  • Focus on counting skills. Focus on the ‘five-ness of 5’ using one hand and the die pattern for 5
  • Comparison of sets - by matching. Use the language of comparison: more than, fewer than, an equal number
  • Explore the concept of ‘whole’ and ‘part’
  • Focus on the composition of 3, 4 and 5
  • Practise object counting skills
  • Match numerals to quantities within 10
  • Verbal counting beyond 20

Understanding the World

Our Local Area and Christmas

In our Understanding the World sessions this half term the children will be learning;

Our Local Area - 

  • to talk about where they live and recognising that they all live in a different house but some people might live in the same village/town.
  • how we use maps to find places and create their own maps.
  • to name different features in our locality by going on a local walk.
  • to talk about their favourite places and describe what they are like

Christmas

  • why we celebrate Christmas
  • the Christian story of Christmas
  • that around the world people celebrate Christmas in different ways

 Expressive Arts and Design

We will be exploring a variety of different art techniques and creating pieces to reflect the changing time of year. The children always have access to a variety of art materials which they can use to create their own artwork throughout the day as well as enhancements we have provided which link to celebrations, seasons or the books we are using.

 Physical Development

This half term the children will be building their growth motor strength and fine motor skills through both practical activities as well as targeted work on their letter formation and development of their strength and stamina. 

In PE the children will be exploring Dance - with a variety of activities which include a focus on the children developing their ability to move their bodies as well as create a short dance routine with specific movements to a piece of music.

 Communication and Language

We will be developing the children`s ability to listen and respond to a variety of stories which are either our literacy focus texts as well as the books we read at various points within the day. We will encourage the children to share their thoughts and ideas throughout the day during group activities as well as during their individual explorations.

EYFS:

Building relationships: Special relationships

In this unit, children are learning to explore why families and special people are valuable, understand why it is important to share and develop strategies, see themselves as valuable individual and explore diversity through thinking about similarities and differences.

YEAR 1 Subject specifics - below is a breakdown of each of the areas that the children will be learning about throughout the half term with additional details; 

English

Book 1 - Emily Brown and the Thing

We will be using this book to focus on sentence construction and more specific grammar such as knowing whether to add s or es to make a singular word plural. We will be looking at different sentence types and the children will be able to recognise the difference between a statement sentence and a question. The children will be retelling parts of the story as well as innovating their own idea. 

Book 2 - The Lonely Christmas Tree

We will be using this book as a narrative focus, the children will learn to use adjectives to create expanded noun phrases, practise using and to join sentences together as well as retelling the poem as a story.

Maths

Mastering Number -

Pupils will;

  • explore the structure of even numbers (including that even numbers can be composed by doubling any number, and can be composed of 2s)
  • explore the structure of the odd numbers as being composed of 2s and 1 more
  • explore the composition of each of the numbers 6, 8, and 10
  • explore number tracks and number lines and identify the differences between them

White Rose Maths - 

Our focus this half term is based around Addition and Subtraction. They will learn how to add by adding together and adding more. They will then use these skills to solve addition problems. We will then focus on subtraction by finding a part of a whole number, take away using practical resources and taking away by crossing out using pictorial representations. They will then learn how to subtract using a numberline.

Geography

Our Local Area

By the end of the unit, children will know… 

  • how to use a world map to find the UK. 
  • how to use a local map to find Keinton Mandeville or the place in which they live nearby. 
  • how to create a simple map of our school grounds. 
  • how to use a map to locate places around the school using grid references. 
  • key physical/human geography landmarks of Somerset as well as within the local area of Keinton Mandeville 
  • That Somerset is the county that which we live in and it is also part of England. 
  • To know the 4 points of the compass and use these to find places on a map of Keinton Mandeville. 

By the end of the unit, children will be able to...

  • Recognise and name their local town, village or city.  
  • Identify key landmarks or features in the local area (e.g. school, park, shops).  
  • Understand the concept of "local" vs "far away". 
  • Use simple maps and plans (e.g. a map of the school or local area).  
  • Recognise basic map symbols (e.g. trees, buildings, roads).  
  • Begin to understand directions (left, right, forwards, backwards).  
  • Use positional language (next to, behind, in front of). 
  • Observe and describe features of the local environment.  
  • Compare natural and human-made features. 
  • Take part in simple fieldwork activities (e.g. walking around the local area).  
  • Record observations using drawings, photos, or simple charts.  
  • Ask and answer questions about what they see.

PSHE 

Year 1 -

Health and wellbeing

In this unit, children will learn how to wash their hands properly and why it is important for themselves and others to do this. They will learn how to deal with an allergic reaction. We will explore positive sleep habits and two different methods of relaxation: progressive muscle relaxation and laughter. They will explore health-related jobs and people who help look after our health. We will focus on identifying personal strengths and qualities as well as identifying different ways to manage feelings.

 Design and Technology

 In this unit of work on Cooking and Nutrition - Smoothies

Children will learn how to prepare foods by cutting and juicing and selecting fruits and vegetables to create a smoothie to meet a design brief.

 

Computing

Creating Media - Digital Imagery

In this unit the children will learn how to operate a camera to take photos and videos. Develop the skills associated with sequencing in unplugged activities. Use a basic range of tools within graphic editing software. Develop control of the mouse through dragging, clicking and resizing images to create different effects. Begin to develop an understanding of different software tools. They will practise searching and downloading images from the internet safely. They will learn that when using the internet to search for images, they need to know what to do if they come across something online that worries them or makes them feel uncomfortable.
